10 Tips for Safer Travel During the Holidays

Posted by Sandy Salcido, October 23, 2019

The holiday season is rapidly approaching, and you might be making your travel plans now. Along with checking out flights and booking hotels, we hope you’re also making plans for your safety. Travel can present certain challenges, but with preparation you will enjoy a safe and relaxing trip.

Pack your medications. This seems obvious, but you would be surprised at how many people forget to pack necessary medications! Also remember glasses, contact lens equipment, hearing aids, denture supplies, and any other medical equipment you need on a regular basis. If you will be flying, place these items in a carry-on bag. You don’t want to risk a drastic impact from lost luggage.

Don’t advertise your trip. Posting about your trip on social media is like sending out an invitation to would-be burglars. And when staying in hotels, use the “do not disturb” sign on your hotel door. There’s no need to tell everyone on your hall that you’re gone for the day.

Share your travel plans with a loved one. Offer flight information or driving routes to one or two people, so they can check up on you.

Keep your cell phone charged. Also, remember to bring your charger. In an emergency, help is just a phone call away.

Be careful with exotic foods. Sometimes when we travel, it’s easy to get carried away with regard to food. Continue to avoid anything that upsets your stomach or interferes with your regular diet.

Carry a bottle of water. Yes, you can get dehydrated even in the cool season.

Pack lightly. Bring only what you truly need, so that you don’t have to haul overly heavy bags through airports. Leave expensive jewelry and other pricey items at home, locked in a safe, to reduce the risk of loss.

Wear comfortable shoes. You might be walking more than usual, so support your feet with comfortable shoes. If you’re going through airport security, choose a pair that are easy to remove.

Check the weather. Avoid driving during heavy rain or winds. If roads will be icy, consider alternate routes or the possibility of flying instead.

Check into travel insurance. If you’re leaving the country, consider the possibility of supplemental insurance to cover medical needs.

And of course, have fun! With attention to these few details, travel is incredibly safe and rewarding.
